Call Emily at 296-5266 to set up an account. You must supply us with a username and password. The username will double as your email address for example ( If your username is "johndoe" then your email address would be "johndoe@waverly.net" or "johndoe@centerville.net".) The domain name depends on were you are located or which server you dial into.
Print these instructions for future reference.

Have your Windows CD handy before starting you may need them.
 

Illustrations will vary in different versions of Windows.
Step 1.
Verify that Dialup Networking is Installed

Double click on "My Computer".  If dialup networking is installed you will see a folder called "Dial Up Networking" Maximize the window to make sure its not hiding.  If dialup networking is not installed  go to control panel  by double clicking on "My computer" and then on "Control panel".  Now double click on "Add and remove programs" now click on the "Windows setup" tab.  Click on "communications" and then click on the "details" button.  Put a check in the box next to "Dialup Networking".  Now click on "ok" and then click on apply.

Step 2.
Verify that the Dialup Adapter and TCP/IP are Installed

Press the "Start" button and then on " Settings" and  then on "Control Panel".  Double click the icon called "Network".  You'll see a dialog box like the one below.  If the necessary components are installed move to step 3.

Make sure the Configuration tab is selected.  "Dialup Adapter" and "TCP/IP" should be present and are the only components absolutely necessary.  If these components are not installed you may need your Windows 95/98 disks or CD. Make sure only one of each component exist in the configuration.   If you have more than on "TCP/IP" you will not be able to move data (web pages won't load". ) The "Primary Network Logon" can be as illustrated or click on the drop down arrow and select "windows logon".

If you need to add "Dialup Adapter" click on "Add".  Double click "Adapter" then scroll down the list on the left side and  select "Microsoft".  Choose the "Dialup Adapter" on the right side and click on "Ok".

If you need to add "TCP/IP" click on "Add".  Double click "Protocol"  then scroll down the list of manufacturers on the left side and select "Microsoft".  Choose "TCP/IP" on the right side and click on "Ok".  Once you have the necessary components installed click on "ok" at the bottom of the "Network" window. You will be ask to restart the computer choose "yes".

Step 3
Once the computer has restarted Double click on " My Computer" from the desktop and  then double click the "Dialup Networking".  Double click on ' Make New Connection". This will walk you through the "Make New Connection wizard". The first dialog box looks like this.

Type a name for your connection (waverly.net, centerville.net, dickson.net).  Your modem should be shown in the "Select a device" area as illustrated above.  Click on "configure" and you will see the following window.

On the General tab, Crank up your modem speed to as fast as you think it will go. If you have a 14.4K modem, for example, make the maximum speed 19200.  If you have a 56K modem select 115200.  DO NOT select "only connect at this speed".  This will allow your modem to adjust as the connection needs. Click on OK.  Sometime it is necessary to lower the maximum speed if you are not able to stay connected.

Click "Next"  in the Make New Connection wizard and you will see the next dialog window.  Enter the correct access number of your domain and click finish.  The dialup number for Humphreys County is 2962168, Hickman County is 7291695, and the dialup number for Dickson County is 2631010 .  You will be told that you have successfully created a connection called by the name you specified. Click on OK.  Your Dialup Networking folder should now look something like this.

Step 4
Right mouse click on your connection  in the "dial up networking" window and choose properties. You will see the properties window for you connection shown below. This is were you could change your access number if needed.

 

 

Click on the "Server Types" tab or button this will open  the "Server Types" dialog box.  It should look something like this depending on your version of  Windows 95/98.

Under "Advanced options" uncheck "Log onto network"  The only advanced option that needs to be checked is "Enable software compression".  Also, make sure that TCP/IP is the only Allowed network protocol.  Then press the TCP/IP Settings button you will see the TCP/IP properties window shown below.

Due to  recent changes made to the system it is now possible to select "Server assigned name server addresses".  By making this selection you will not be required to enter Primary DNS or Secondary DNS addresses has illustrated above. Hit the OK button in the remaining dialog box, and you're almost ready to dial. You should now be back to the "Dialup Networking" window.

Step 5
At this point it is a good ideal to place a short cut on your desktop for the dial up connection.  Right mouse click on your connection in the "Dial up Networking" window and select "create short cut".  Windows will tell you that it can't create a shortcut here and ask if you want to put one on the desktop instead.  Choose "yes".  Close all the "Dialup networking" window and any other windows that may be open.

Getting Connected
Double click  the new shortcut on your desk top for  your connection.  This will bring up the "Connect To" window shown below.  Enter your user name and password in the appropriate text areas.  Make sure the number is correct and click on connect.
