    FAQ:
    Question
    Answer

    Q. How come I connect just fine but I get disconnected frequently.
A.We don't disconnect people unless the connection has been idle for a really long time and we suspect the user does not realize he or she is still connected. If you're getting frequent disconnects it's actually *your* modem that's doing it.
Really, though, it's usually not your modem's fault. It's your phone line. Modems are extremely susceptible to noise (static, clicks, hums, etc.) on the line. Even noise that you can't hear using a telephone will cause problems for a modem. Any amount of noise can cause problems--it essentially confuses your modem. If the noise on the line increases to the point that reliable data communications cannot continue, a couple of things may happen. Most quality modems will try to do what is called a retrain. Meaning that your modem adjusts its speed to try to compensate for the noise on the line. Modems will usually adjust the speed downward until a speed is reached where reliable communication can continue. The slower a connection goes, the more line noise it can deal with, and still maintain reliable data transfers. If the
noise hit is too severe for a retrain, it may cause a renegotiation. In a renegotiation, your modem says to our modem, "okay, I just got hammered with some serious noise, forget everything, and let's start over from scratch" At that point, they start over as if they were never connected in the first place, and try to re-establish the connection. If the noise hit is so severe that a renegotiation cannot take place, or if your modem is too cheap (low quality) to renegotiate, your modem will disconnect.
